WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
Like other types of cancer, skin cancer develops as the result of mutant skin cells. Treatment of skin cancer is vitally important, and your health depends upon it. Because your health is so important, Dr. Nimtz goes way beyond just plastic surgery to help you, and we have joined forces with Lexington Dermatology, namely Dr. Debbie Phillips, Kirsten Adair and Gretchen Cliburn, to address issues of skin cancer. Dr. Nimtz has a tremendous amount of experience and success in this area, and he has performed a significant number of skin cancer reconstruction cases with a range of complexity involved. He can conveniently treat you in one of our two in-office surgery rooms.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SKIN CANCER TREATMENT?
You should have an annual checkup with a dermatologist to monitor your skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and men and women of all ages can get skin cancer. In most cases, skin cancer removal is primarily a cosmetic treatment but for some, removing skin cancer will prevent the cancer cells from spreading to surrounding tissues. Skin cancer surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed under a local anesthetic or with minor sedation. In most cases, it involves making an incision and removing the cancerous tissue, modifying the approach depending on the size and location of the affected area. In some cases, the first layers of tissue are removed and then closely examined under a microscope by Dr. Nimtz.

Meet Dr. NimtzWHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR SKIN CANCER TREATMENT?
Unfortunately, people who live in Kentucky have been reported to be among the highest at risk for skin cancer in the United States. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It usually appears on areas of the body with the most sun exposure like the face, neck, and hands. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that is characterized by round pearl-like or darkly pigmented bumps on the skin, and it tends to affect only the upper layers of the skin. Dr. Nimtz can easily help you treat this particular form of carcinoma. Melanoma is more serious, and it appears as a brown to the black lesion with irregular boundaries, going deeper into the skin, and easily metastasizing. This form of skin cancer must receive immediate treatment, so the cancer does not spread to other areas of the body.
WHAT IS THE SKIN CANCER PROCEDURE?
When it comes to the treatment of skin cancer, this depends entirely on the extent to which the cancer has spread in different skin layers. Most cases of basal cell carcinoma involve excising the cancerous tissue and then Dr. Nimtz closing the wound with sutures; however, for those cases of basal cell skin cancer that have progressed deeper into the skin, Mohs surgery provides the highest successful cure rate. Mohs surgery is an outpatient procedure that involves removing key layers of skin that contain the malignant cells sequentially until microscopic examination shows that no cancer is left. Dr. Nimtz may also utilize a procedure called frozen section, which involves freezing cancerous tissue until your remaining tissue is completely cancer-free.
HOW MUCH DOES SKIN CANCER TREATMENT COST?
The price of your skin cancer treatment procedure will vary depending on your unique treatment needs as well as other related factors. After you meet with Dr. Nimtz, we will identify exactly what your skin cancer treatment procedure will cost, at which time we will give you an all-inclusive quote. We offer CareCredit® as a financing option, and our office also accepts Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discover as well as cash or personal checks.
