Laser Skin Resurfacing
Normal sun exposure, hormones, the natural aging process, and other factors can all damage the skin. Fortunately, laser skin resurfacing at our practice in Lexington, London, and Georgetown, Kentucky, can restore a smooth, evenly toned complexion when age spots, fine lines, and irregular pigmentation take their toll. At Commonwealth Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jared Nimtz offers advanced laser skin resurfacing treatments with the latest technology, delivering highly effective and customized sessions.
Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Invasive?
Skin resurfacing may sound invasive, but it can be tailored to be as light or aggressive as you would like. The downtime can be just a few hours to a week, depending upon the extent of your specific skin concerns and the best method to treat them.
What Are the Benefits of Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing may be performed on most areas of exposed skin, including the face, chest, back, and arms. Both men and women choose these treatments to correct a variety of concerns, including:
- Fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging
- Acne scars
- Sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other blemishes on the skin
- Rosacea and other redness
- Enlarged pores
We offer the Lumenis ULTRApulse® Alpha, a CO2 laser that provides long-lasting skin resurfacing results.
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
Laser skin resurfacing treats the outer layers of the skin to target excess pigment, redness, wrinkles, pores, uneven texture, and other concerns. With VISIA® Skin Analysis, we can assess surface concerns such as brown spots, redness, wrinkles, and enlarged pores and look deep into the layers of the skin to reveal the damage below that is not visible.
Ablative lasers like the ULTRApulse® Alpha remove the outer layer of damaged skin to reveal the underlying smoother, softer, clearer, younger-looking skin below the surface. These treatments can be adjusted to various depths ranging from superficial (just a few hours of downtime) to deep (a week of downtime).
The laser energy also stimulates collagen growth within the skin, thereby improving the skin’s structure and elasticity. Dr. Nimtz carefully controls the level of energy emitted to remove the old skin precisely and achieve your desired level of rejuvenation.
How Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?
We perform laser resurfacing in our office or the operating room. First, we cleanse the face thoroughly and apply either a local anesthetic or use a temporary dental block, depending upon the depth and outcome the patient desires.
The laser device is directed over the targeted skin, where its energy is released in quick pulses. Treatments can take from approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending upon the condition of your skin, the number of target areas, and your treatment goals.
What Is Recovery From Laser Skin Resurfacing Like?
After a deep laser resurfacing treatment, you may need to apply ointment to your treated skin for about a week. We also offer ALASTIN® Regenerating Skin Nectar and exosome therapy post-procedure to reduce downtime. Dr. Nimtz typically recommends that you prep the skin with these products for a month before your procedure to achieve the best results.
Are There Alternatives to Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Commonwealth Plastic Surgery is proud to offer other laser and corrective treatments, such as intense pulsed light (IPL), to treat pigmentation and broken capillaries. As a non-ablative treatment, IPL penetrates the skin without affecting its surface. IPL is gentler than laser skin resurfacing and is appropriate for mild cases of skin unevenness.
Patients may also get similar rejuvenating results with our variety of chemical peels. We will help guide you to the best treatment or combination of procedures to achieve your aesthetic goals.
